Making Sense of Sex

Growing up is normal, natural and inevitable. You can’t go on being a child for ever, and I’m sure even if you could, you wouldn’t want to. Most people look forwards to being a mature adult who is capable of doing adult things, such as driving a car, going to work, buying a house, enjoying sexual relationships and having children.

Of course, not all adults want to do all these things, and you will make many choices and decisions as you grow up. This book is about sexuality, in particular puberty and adolescence.

During adolescence – the time between childhood and adulthood -your body will change, along with your thinking processes and emotions, so that you look and function more like a grown-up. While all these changes are perfectly normal, they can leave you feeling exhausted and bewildered a lot of the time.

In this book we are going to look at many of the changes and challenges of adolescence so that you are well-informed about what is happening to you, preferably before it happens. This is important.

For example, if children aren’t given plenty of information about puberty, significant changes, such as girls’ periods, or boys’ wet dreams, can come as quite a shock the very first time they happen. In the past, when children often didn’t get told much about the changes at puberty, many of them were confused and scared.

In MakingSenseofSex, as well as learning a lot about puberty, you will also read about the things you can do to care for your body and your emotions, so that you stay healthy, and look and feel good.

The aim is not only to reassure you that what you are going through is perfectly normal, but also to give you the information you need so that you can feel confident and able to make smart choices for yourself.
