Strategies of Genius : Albert Einstein

Strategies of Genius :  Albert Einstein by Robert B. Dilts – Volume II

“…the essential in the being of a man of my type lies precisely in what he thinks and how he thinks, not in what he does or suffers‘ – Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) is not only acknowledged around the world as a genius but has practically become the symbol for genius in this century. The problem space that his ideas dealt with encompasses our spiritual and social worlds as well as scientific and physical reality. He introduced a whole new paradigm of thinking that has affected many different areas of our lives.

His discoveries in the field of theoretical physics made the “atomic age” possible and his humanitarianism has served as an example for all of science. His theory of relativity changed our entire conception of the universe and such basic aspects of our reality as time, space, matter and energy.

Einstein’s way of thinking allowed him to construct new models of reality as well as creatively challenge basic presuppositions in the existing models of his time.

How do we make sense out of a man like Einstein? What can we learn from him? Was his genius a function of his genetics? divine inspiration? a lucky accident? or perhaps a specific thinking process that might be possible to teach to others?

Einstein himself posed similar questions about the great Isaac Newton (creator of differential calculus, the laws of gravitation and motion, and the father of modern physics) when he wrote:

“Newton was the first to succeed in finding a clearly formulated basis from which he could deduce a wide field of phenomena by means of mathematical thinking, logically, quantitatively and in harmony with experience…

“Newton was the first to succeed in finding a clearly formulated basis from which he could deduce a wide field of phenomena by means of mathematical thinking, logically, quantitatively and in harmony with experience…

This is precisely the issue I seek to address with Einstein -to tackle the “problem of the ‘how’” in relationship to Einstein himself. How did Einstein’s own incredible ideas “come to birth in his brain?” How can we to some extent demystify the “miracle” of Einstein’s mental abilities and convert them into something which may be “grasped” by our intellects in such a way that our admiration for his mind becomes that much greater?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) provides a new set of tools that can allow us to take major steps toward this promising but elusive goal. The mission of NLP has been to define and extend the leading edge of human knowledge -especially our knowledge about ourselves.

This work on Einstein, the second volume of a larger study on the Strategies of Genius, is a part of that mission. My goal is to model the thinking strategies of people who have not only contributed to our knowledge of the world around us, but have also contributed to our knowledge about ourselves. It is my hope that we can discover how to use those strategies to further contribute to the evolution of our species and our planet.

One of the great contributions of NLP is that it gives us a way to look past the behavioral content of what people do to the more invisible forces behind those behaviors; to the structures of thought that has allowed these geniuses to accomplish what they accomplished.

NLP provides a structure and a language to be able to put into a set of chunks or steps the relevant mental processes used by a Mozart, Leonardo or Einstein so that those mental processes can be transferred to others.

The other tremendous contribution of NLP is that by looking at the underlying structure of an activity it allows us to transcend the content of that activity to the degree that we can apply the thinking process of genius in one field to another entire area of content. We can discover certain key elements of how Einstein thought about physics and apply them to thinking about social organization, effective business practice, managerial issues or resolving personal problems.
